The founder of The Headies Awards, Ayo Animashaun, has criticised Nigerian artistes who submit their music for consideration at international award ceremonies but allegedly fail to enter their works for Nigeria’s biggest music awards, only to complain when they are not nominated.
Animashaun expressed his displeasure in a post on his Instagram Story on Thursday, describing the situation as ironic and questioning why some artistes appear eager to seek recognition from foreign award bodies while overlooking The Headies.
“Tom, Dick and Harry will submit entries to foreign award bodies that don’t even care about them and proudly post about it. But these same people won’t submit their entries to the Headies, yet they’ll complain about not being nominated. Funny,” he wrote.
His comments come amid reports that several Nigerian music stars, including Davido, Ayra Starr, Tems, Asake, Burna Boy, Rema and Victony, have submitted their works for consideration ahead of the 2027 Grammy Awards.
Beyond the issue of award submissions, Animashaun also defended the decision to stage The Headies outside Nigeria, insisting that the organisers remained confident in their vision despite criticism.
According to him, the support of artistes who benefit from the awards and sponsors who believe in the project remains more important than public disapproval.
“As long as those who benefit from what we do understand and appreciate it, the artistes understand why taking The Headies to the moon sometimes is the right move, and our sponsors see the vision, we can stand firmly by our decisions,” he stated.
He added that while everyone had a right to express an opinion, not every criticism deserved equal consideration.
“Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but not every opinion carries equal weight. Posterity will be kind to those who see possibilities before they become obvious,” Animashaun said.
The remarks come amid discussions surrounding the future direction of The Headies, particularly its decision to host its 18th edition in Toronto, Canada.
The ceremony, initially scheduled for October 23, 2026, has been postponed to April 10 and 11, 2027
