The DNA case involving Liam, the son of late Nigerian singer Mohbad, has been adjourned to November 16, 2026, following concerns raised by the singer’s family over the proposed testing process.
Mohbad’s father, Joseph Aloba, and the family’s legal representative disclosed the development in a video circulating on social media.
According to the lawyer, a newly appointed court welfare officer has been assigned to investigate the family’s concerns about the facility selected to conduct the DNA test.
The family reportedly expressed reservations about the centre’s director, whom the lawyer linked to Mohbad’s previous autopsy. The representative also questioned whether the facility would conduct the test or merely collect samples before transferring them to another laboratory.
“What came up in court today is not the regular DNA, it is the reportedly secret DNA that was found by the other party while our own was still ongoing,” the lawyer said.
He added that the family had filed a motion seeking to be joined as an interested party in the proceedings, with the matter subsequently adjourned to November 16, 2026.
The lawyer said the family wanted clear information about where the samples would be collected, how they would be handled and how long it would take to transport them to the testing laboratory.
He further alleged that an earlier sample transfer had taken between six and eight months. According to him, the family contacted the facility reportedly responsible for analysing the samples but was informed that it had not received any materials relating to Mohbad. The previous exercise eventually produced an inconclusive result, he claimed.
The representative said the newly appointed welfare officer had listened to the family’s concerns and promised to investigate the matter before reporting back.
He added that the family would await her findings before deciding on its next course of action.
The lawyer, however, stressed that the family was not opposed to conducting the DNA test but insisted that the process must be transparent and that the integrity of the samples and results must be protected.
Mohbad died on September 12, 2023, after reportedly receiving an injection from an auxiliary nurse. He was buried the following day but was exhumed on September 21, 2023, for an autopsy.
In May 2024, pathologists reported that the cause of death could not be determined because of advanced decomposition.
Since the singer’s death, Aloba has maintained that his son should not be reburied until the paternity of Liam is legally established. In April, the singer’s father renewed his call for a court-ordered DNA test to determine whether Liam was Mohbad’s biological son.
Earlier, in February, an Ikorodu Magistrate’s Court authorised three separate DNA tests to be conducted abroad, with two designated for the United Kingdom and one for the United States.
Representatives of Aloba and Mohbad’s widow, Wunmi, reportedly supervised the collection of samples from the parties involved.
