One year after introducing himself to a wider audience with Catharsis, FOLA returns with 9, a sophomore album that further establishes him as one of the exciting voices in Nigeria’s contemporary Afro-R&B scene. While his debut introduced listeners to his emotional and romantic side, 9 shows an artiste who is becoming more confident in his sound and willing to explore new musical directions.
Released in October 2026, the 14-track project is a beautiful body of work that builds on the foundation laid by Catharsis. FOLA has stayed true to the qualities that made his debut connect with listeners, including his smooth vocals, emotional lyrics and ability to create melodies that stay with you. Rather than abandoning his original sound, he builds on it, giving listeners another project that feels familiar but still offers something new.

One of the things that makes 9 enjoyable is how FOLA’s music continues to sound fresh, even when listeners are already familiar with some of his songs. Tracks such as “Attention” and “Treat You Right” still hit differently, showing that their appeal goes beyond the excitement of their initial release. They remain enjoyable because of their melodies and the feelings they bring to listeners. This ability to create music that people want to revisit is one of FOLA’s biggest strengths.
Another major highlight of 9 is its impressive lineup of guest artistes. FOLA brings together some of the biggest names and exciting talents in Nigerian music, including Davido, Ayra Starr, BNXN, Zlatan and Bella Shmurda, among others. The features give the album variety, with each artiste bringing something different to the project. Despite the impressive names involved, FOLA still holds his own and keeps the album centred on his sound.
One of the best songs on the album is “2am in Toronto”, his collaboration with Davido. The two artistes have already shown their chemistry on “B4 B4”, and they continue that connection on this track. Their styles blend naturally, allowing FOLA’s melodies and Davido’s delivery to complement each other. “2am in Toronto” stands out as one of the strongest songs on the album, proving that their musical partnership works well and leaving listeners with another reason to look forward to future collaborations.
FOLA also delivers another enjoyable moment with BNXN. Their chemistry is not new, as both artistes have previously worked together on songs such as “Alone (Remix)” and “Very Soon”. They understand each other’s sound, and that connection makes their collaborations feel natural. On 9, their musical relationship continues to show how well their voices and styles work together, adding to the album’s strong collection of collaborations.
Another track that deserves attention is “Crime”, FOLA’s reinterpretation of 2Baba’s classic “If Love Is a Crime”. The song was already highly anticipated after its snippet surfaced earlier in the year, leaving fans eager to hear the full version. Thankfully, it does not disappoint. FOLA gives the classic a fresh sound while keeping the emotion that made the original special. It is one of the standout tracks on the album and, personally, one of my favourites. Taking on a song as familiar as “If Love Is a Crime” is not an easy task, but FOLA delivers a version that fits his musical style. He brings a new feel to the record without losing the message that made it memorable. The track also shows his understanding of love songs and his ability to connect with listeners through music that carries genuine emotion.
Beyond the collaborations and standout tracks, 9 shows how much FOLA has grown as an artiste. He appears more confident in his sound and understands what makes his music connect with people. The album allows him to explore different musical ideas while remaining true to the qualities that made listeners pay attention to him in the first place. His progress is also reflected in the recognition he has received. FOLA earned 10 nominations at the 18th Headies Awards for his work on Catharsis and other releases, making him the most-nominated artiste at the ceremony.
Ultimately, 9 is a beautiful sophomore album that builds on what made Catharsis special while showing FOLA’s growth. The project delivers memorable songs, impressive collaborations and moments that make it worth listening to from beginning to end. One year after his debut album, FOLA has shown that he is not simply relying on the success of Catharsis. He is continuing to grow, experiment and improve his craft. His consistency is becoming one of the strongest parts of his journey, and 9 is another example of the work he is putting into his music.
