The 78th edition of the Writers Guild Awards delivered major wins on Sunday night in New York City, with Sinners emerging as one of the evening’s biggest standouts. The acclaimed horror film, written and directed by Ryan Coogler, took home the award for Best Original Screenplay. Accepting the honor on behalf of the film was its star, Miles Caton. Meanwhile, the film’s strongest Oscar-season rival, One Battle After Another by Paul Thomas Anderson, won Best Adapted Screenplay, with cast member Shayna McHayle accepting the award.
Television also had its moment in the spotlight, with the medical drama The Pitt dominating the TV categories. The series secured wins for Drama Series, New Series, and Episodic Drama, making it one of the night’s most celebrated shows. Beyond competitive awards, the ceremony also honored several industry veterans. Late-night host Stephen Colbert received the Walter Bernstein Award for his sharp critiques of powerful institutions on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, presented by comedian Robert Smigel. Filmmaker Terry George was given the Ian McLellan Hunter Award for Career Achievement by Don Cheadle, while writer Diana Son received the Richard B. Jablow Award for Devoted Service to the Guild from Kathy McGee.
Unlike most years, the ceremony took place only in New York after the Writers Guild of America West canceled its Los Angeles event due to an ongoing labor dispute with the Writers Guild Staff Union. The Los Angeles ceremony had been scheduled to honor James Cameron, Don Reo, and Mstyslav Chernov for their contributions to screenwriting. Hosting the New York ceremony for the third time, comedian Roy Wood Jr. injected humor into the tense atmosphere, joking during his opening monologue that upcoming contract negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers would likely see “somebody lose their cool” before calmer heads prevail.
