Ajara Lasisi, the Nigerian actress fondly known as Aunty Ajara in the Yoruba film industry, has passed away. She reportedly died in the early hours of Thursday, according to confirmation from her family.
The sad news was announced by her brother, Ridwan Lasisi, in an emotional video message shared with the public. In the message, Ridwan confirmed her passing and expressed deep appreciation to colleagues, fans, and well-wishers who had shown immense support during her illness.
“Good morning to you all. My name is Ridwan Lasisi. I am a brother to Ajara. The doctor confirmed to us this morning that Ajara has passed on,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of the family, Ridwan thanked members of the film industry and the wider public for their prayers, financial support, and encouragement. He also made a heartfelt appeal, asking people to stop sending money to the account previously shared for her medical care, noting that the purpose for the fundraising no longer remained.
“We appreciate the president and all industry members. We also use this opportunity to appeal to those sending money not to send it anymore. The one we are contributing for her sake is no more. Thank you so much. We do not want you to send money into that account again,” he added.
Aunty Ajara’s health challenges became public last week after her colleague, actress Ronke Oshodi-Oke, made an emotional appeal for help. Oshodi-Oke disclosed that Lasisi was hospitalized in critical condition, dependent on an oxygen machine, and that her health continued to deteriorate despite intensive medical care and the high cost of treatment.
Known for her powerful and often maternal roles, Aunty Ajara was a familiar and beloved face in Yoruba cinema. She appeared in several popular films, including Gingerrr, Queen Lateefah, and Isiti, earning admiration for her depth, authenticity, and strong screen presence.
Beyond her career, the late actress had also spoken openly about personal pain. Last year, she revealed that she had suffered the loss of a child.
