Manchester United are reported to be assessing Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey, who is in the final year of his Fulham contract.
TEAMtalk reported the interest, as relayed by Complete Sports on 30 October. It said United's football department is impressed with the 26-year-old as the club looks at its defensive options ahead of an extensive rebuild in 2027.
Bassey's deal runs out in the summer of 2027, although Fulham hold the option to extend it by a further year. The report said Fulham want to agree new terms while rival clubs step up their monitoring.
Who else is watching
The same report named Newcastle United, Everton, Inter Milan, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig among the clubs monitoring him.
Bassey joined Fulham in July 2023 from Ajax, and has been given the captain's armband this season. He turns 27 in December and can play at centre-back or left-back. Soccernet's earlier piece on his minutes for Fulham and the Carabao Cup preview show how central he has become.
Analysis: Why the contract clock matters
A contract with one year left, plus a club option, gives both sides a decision to make. If Fulham extend, they keep control of the timing of any sale; if talks stall, a player in his final year is usually easier for suitors to approach.
Nothing here says a bid has been made. For Nigeria, the interest underlines how much value Bassey carries as a left-footed defender who can cover two positions.
The next signal to watch is whether Fulham open formal talks on a new contract before January.
