Olu Jacobs was one of Nigeria’s most celebrated actors, whose career spanned more than five decades across theatre, television and film. Known for his deep voice, commanding presence and ability to bring authority to every role, Jacobs became a familiar face to generations of Nigerian and African audiences. From his early days on the stage in Britain to his success in Nollywood, he built a reputation as one of the most respected figures in the African entertainment industry.
Born on July 11, 1942, in Nigeria, He developed an interest in acting while growing up, taking part in school drama, debating activities and church programmes. His passion for performance grew stronger after he watched a production by renowned Nigerian theatre practitioner Hubert Ogunde. The experience encouraged him to pursue acting professionally and eventually take his talent beyond Nigeria.
Jacobs travelled to the United Kingdom and studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, one of the world’s respected institutions for dramatic training. After his studies, he worked with repertoire theatres and appeared in a number of British television productions. During the 1970s, he featured in programmes such as The Goodies, Till Death Us Do Part, The Professionals, The Tomorrow People and Barlow at Large. These early experiences helped him develop the discipline and versatility that later became important to his Nigerian film career.
His international film career included appearances in several notable productions. He featured in The Dogs of War (1980), Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend (1985) and Roman Polanski’s Pirates (1986). His work outside Nigeria demonstrated his ability to operate in different production environments before he returned home and became increasingly involved in Nigeria’s developing entertainment industry.
Back in Nigeria, Jacobs became one of the most recognisable actors in Nollywood. He appeared in a large number of films, often playing kings, chiefs, wealthy patriarchs, traditional rulers, politicians and other influential characters. His performances often combined his powerful voice and theatrical background with a natural ability to portray complex characters. His film credits include Greatness, where he played King; Smoke & Mirrors, as Alhaji Sanni; League of Gentlemen, as Chief Kolade; Bent Arrows, as Mr. Johnson; Sacred Lies, as Theodore; White Chapel, as Chief Tonye; Adesuwa, as Ezomo; Potomanto, as Bankole; The Antique, as Oba Ekpen; Bloody Ring, as Osuma; and Oloibiri.
Beyond his individual performances, Jacobs played an important role in the growth of Nigeria’s entertainment industry. His career connected the older tradition of Nigerian theatre with the rapidly expanding film and television industries. Together with his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, he was also involved in the Lufodo Group and the Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts, which contributed to film production and the development of performing-arts talent.
Jacobs received several major awards and honours during his career. He won the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2007 and received the Industry Merit Award at the 2013 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards. He was also honoured with the MAA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016. In 2011, the Federal Government of Nigeria conferred on him the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic in recognition of his contribution to the Nigerian arts.
In his later years, Jacobs largely stayed away from the public spotlight as his health affected his appearances. His wife, Joke Silva, publicly discussed his health condition, while reports of his death were repeatedly dismissed by the family. Regardless of his later absence from the screen, Olu Jacobs left a lasting mark on Nigerian theatre and cinema. His performances, international experience and decades of dedication helped establish him as one of the defining actors of his generation, and his body of work continues to be remembered by audiences and fellow performers.
