Benjamin Provo, a former security guard at Donda Academy, is seeking approximately $23 million in damages in his discrimination lawsuit against Ye. Provo claims he was treated unfairly and eventually lost his job after refusing to cut his dreadlocks, which he says he wore for religious reasons. The lawsuit, filed in 2024, also accuses Ye and members of his management team of treating Black employees differently from white employees.
According to recent court documents, Provo says employees were instructed to shave their heads, but he refused because of his religious beliefs. Ye has denied that Provo was fired because of his hairstyle. His lawyers have also argued that Provo was employed by a third-party staffing company rather than directly by Ye. Beyond the hairstyle dispute, Provo alleges that Black employees were subjected to a hostile workplace and claims that books by prominent Black figures, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., were removed from Donda Academy.
The case has also included testimony from former Ye chief of staff Milo Yiannopoulos. Court filings indicate that Yiannopoulos discussed the workplace environment and Ye’s controversial comments about race and religion. Meanwhile, both sides have disagreed over which of Ye’s past social media posts should be presented to the jury. Ye’s legal team has argued that some posts praising Hitler and Nazism are unrelated to Provo’s discrimination claims, while Provo’s lawyers want some of the material considered as evidence of the workplace environment. The case is currently scheduled for a jury trial in October.
