Super Eagles: Maduka Okoye achieves Formula 1 dream with silverstone award

Super Eagles goalkeeper Maduka Okoye enjoyed a memorable weekend away from football after presenting the Pirelli Pole Position Award at the 2026 British Grand Prix at Silverstone, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 26-year-old Udinese shot-stopper was invited by Italian tyre manufacturers Pirelli to hand the prestigious award to Mercedes rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who secured pole position for Sunday's race.

Okoye's appearance at one of Formula One's most iconic circuits comes just weeks after the Nigerian international emerged as one of the most sought-after goalkeepers in Serie A, with clubs including Juventus monitoring his situation ahead of the new season.

Maduka Okoye fulfils Formula 1 dream at Silverstone

Serie A and Formula One fans were surprised to see Okoye on the Silverstone podium, but the invitation was not a coincidence.

According to Gazzetta Italy, the former Watford goalkeeper is a huge Formula One fan and attended the British Grand Prix as a special guest of Pirelli, who selected him to present Antonelli with the Pirelli Pole Position Award.

Sharing images from the event on social media, Okoye wrote:

“Childhood dream unlocked. What an honour to present the Pirelli Pole Position Award at Silverstone.

“A weekend I'll never forget. Thank you, Pirelli.”

Off the pitch, Okoye's growing popularity has risen. Since Nigeria's friendly game against Portugal, the Nigerian international has seen his Instagram following rise from around 250,000 to over 1.5 million in recent weeks, while his TikTok account has also surpassed one million followers.

Juventus among clubs tracking Super Eagles goalkeeper

Okoye heads into the new season with growing interest in his services after an impressive campaign for Udinese.

The former Sparta Rotterdam goalkeeper kept 10 clean sheets in Serie A last season before further enhancing his reputation with assured displays for the Super Eagles in the June friendlies against Poland and Portugal.

Clubs from Germany, England, France and Turkey have made enquiries about the Nigerian goalkeeper, while Italian media have also linked Juventus with a potential move should the Turin giants enter the market for a new goalkeeper this summer.

Despite the speculation, Okoye has insisted he remains fully committed to Udinese.

“I am really very happy at Udinese. Currently my head is completely at Udinese,” he said in a recent interview with Transfermarkt.

“It is a good push for me as a person to know that you are in demand and that one or the other club is on the list.

“However, I leave this to my advisors, where I am in outstanding hands with Gabriele Giuffrida and Co. That’s their part and I have absolute confidence in their work,” the former Dusseldorf goalie concluded.

With pre-season now underway, the Super Eagles goalkeeper will hope to build on last season's performances before linking up with Eric Chelle's side for Nigeria's 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in September, where he is expected to challenge for the No. 1 shirt.
