New Nollywood film Iwe Ala (The Book of Dreams) has begun its nationwide cinema run, following a premiere that brought together filmmakers, traditional rulers, industry stakeholders, and cultural enthusiasts around a story steeped in Ijebu tradition and the legacy of the Ojude Oba festival.
Directed by Adeoluwa Owu, the film is set against the backdrop of the annual festival and follows a respected tailoring dynasty as it navigates betrayal and internal conflict while trying to protect its reputation in the lead-up to the celebrated event. It explores themes of family, identity and legacy, framed by the colour and pageantry of Yoruba cultural life.
The film features a sizeable ensemble cast, including Mercy Aigbe, Owobo Ogunde, Dele Odule, Demola Adedoyin, Tobi Makinde, Eniola Ajao, Aishat Isiaka, Tolu Otebiyi and Farooq Oreagba. Since the premiere, it has drawn attention for its visuals and its portrayal of Yoruba tradition.
One of the premiere’s more notable moments came when the attending monarch, Oba Maroof Adio Alagbe, offered traditional prayers to open the screening and later presented a symbolic gift to one of the film’s producers, Kene Egbue — a gesture meant to represent the passing of cultural values between generations.
The premiere was backed by Seaman’s Schnapps, which served as its official cultural partner. According to Nnenna Uche-Onyenacho, Senior Brand Manager for the brand, the involvement reflected its interest in projects that keep tradition present through contemporary storytelling.
“Iwe Ala is a celebration of identity, legacy and the stories that define us as a people,” she said, adding that the partnership lets the brand contribute to “a cultural moment that not only entertains but also preserves and promotes our heritage.”
The collaboration follows the brand’s presence at Ojude Oba 2026, where it staged a drone display and other activations.
Iwe Ala is currently showing in cinemas across the country.
