Michael Ndika, a prominent Nigerian music executive and entrepreneur, passed away, with news of his death announced on Wednesday. Ndika, fondly known as Big Mike, was widely recognized as the founder of NaijaReview and the long-term manager of Afro-house singer Niniola Apata, who was also his wife. Their marriage, which lasted 13 years, had been kept private, with Niniola publicly denying it as recently as October 2025.

Before his entry into the music industry, Ndika had built a successful career in technology. He worked as a Systems Engineer and later as Head of IT at Associated Haulages, a professional background that shaped his structured, strategic approach to artist management. His transition from technology to music marked the beginning of a quiet but significant influence on the Nigerian music scene.

In February 2011, Ndika founded NaijaReview, initially as a music blog before expanding it into a broader multimedia platform. At a time when global attention on Nigerian music was still emerging, NaijaReview became one of the early champions of Afro-house and contemporary African music. The platform provided promotion, distribution, and artist development services, quickly establishing itself as a respected name within the entertainment industry during a formative period.

Beyond his work with NaijaReview, Ndika was also involved in philanthropy as co-owner of the NGO Adopt-a-Child’s Education, reflecting his commitment to social causes outside of music.

Ndika’s professional and personal connection with Niniola began in 2013. Their relationship started during a business negotiation, when Niniola reached out to Ndika, then managing producer Sarz seeking guidance on her career following her stint on Project Fame West Africa. Impressed by his steadfast approach to management, she brought him on as her own manager around the release of her debut single Ibadi in March 2014. Their partnership eventually grew into a private marriage that lasted over a decade.

Industry figures remember Ndika as a key architect in shaping early digital music promotion and artist development in Nigeria. Media and public relations executive Fola Folayan described him as “one of the key figures who helped define the early days of music promotion, digital entertainment media, and artist development in Nigeria.” Colleagues consistently praised his contributions to the Nigerian entertainment ecosystem, noting how his work supported countless artists while he remained deliberately behind the scenes.

The circumstances surrounding Ndika’s death have not been disclosed, and details regarding his age at the time remain unknown. His deliberate avoidance of the spotlight, even as he helped others achieve fame, underscores a career defined by humility, dedication, and vision.
