Nollywood actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele is bringing her hit movie Behind the Scenes to a global audience, with it streaming on Netflix starting April 3. The film had a very successful run in cinemas, earning over ₦2.7 billion across West Africa and becoming the highest-grossing Nollywood movie ever. It also sold more than 450,000 tickets before leaving cinemas in mid-March.
This move shows Akindele’s unique way of releasing her films. While many filmmakers shifted to streaming platforms after COVID-19, she continued to release her movies in cinemas first and continued to break records, especially during the December holiday season. She previously worked closely with Amazon Prime Video, where films like Battle On Buka Street, A Tribe Called Judah, and Everybody Loves Jenifa were released after their cinema runs, while others like Finding Me went straight to streaming.
Now, her return to Netflix shows how she successfully uses different platforms, cinema, streaming, YouTube, and TV without depending on just one. She also runs popular shows like Jenifa’s Diary and Aiyetoro Town, proving she understands how to reach audiences everywhere.
Behind the Scenes was released in cinemas on December 12, 2025, and co-directed by Akindele and Tunde Olaoye. The movie features actors like Scarlet Gomez, Wanni x Handi, Uzor Arukwe, Destiny Etiko, Tobi Bakre, and Iyabo Ojo.
The film also broke several records. It was the first Nollywood movie to make over ₦2 billion and reached ₦512 million in just 12 days, the fastest in Nollywood history. On Boxing Day 2025, it made ₦129 million in one day, the highest ever for a Nollywood film.
