The 98th Academy Awards (Oscars) held on March 15 2026, at the Dolby Theatre, delivered a night of thrilling wins and historic recognition for cinema’s top talent.
Director Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another emerged as the night’s biggest winner, taking home Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Film Editing.
Michael B. Jordan continued his remarkable award season with a Best Actor win for his dual performance in Sinners, a genre-bending vampire tale. He became the first actor since 1966 to win for portraying twins and the sixth Black actor to claim the award. Sinners also took home Best Original Screenplay and marked another historic milestone: the film’s director of photography.
Other notable wins included Jessie Buckley for Best Actress in Hamnet, Sean Penn for Best Supporting Actor in One Battle After Another, and Amy Madigan for Best Supporting Actress in Weapons.
Autumn Durald Arkapaw became the first woman and first woman of color to win Best Cinematography at the Oscars. Arkapaw, who is of Filipino and African American Creole descent, also made history as the first female cinematographer to shoot in IMAX 65mm and Ultra Panavision for the film.
In the history of the category, only three women had ever been nominated before: Rachel Morrison in 2018 for Mudbound, Ari Wegner in 2021 for The Power of the Dog, and Mandy Walker in 2022 for Elvis. Arkapaw’s win is a landmark moment for representation behind the camera in Hollywood and adds a historic layer to Sinners’ success.
Despite entering the ceremony with a record-breaking 16 nominations, Sinners did not sweep the night but still left a lasting mark with historic wins and standout performances, contributing to a strong showing for Warner Bros., which led all studios with 11 total Oscars.
