The Nigerian music industry was shocked over the weekend by the death of fast-rising Afro-Fuji and street-pop singer Afeez Adeshina, popularly known as Destiny Boy, who died at the age of 21.
News of his death spread on social media on Sunday, January 18. So far, neither his family nor his management has made an official statement, and the cause of his death has not been confirmed.
Born on June 24, 2004, Destiny Boy came from humble beginnings but rose to national fame with his unique mix of Fuji music, Afrobeat sounds, and street-inspired lyrics. He started performing at local gatherings, where he showed his strong stage presence and vocal talent.
He became popular in 2017 after a Fuji-style cover of Davido’s hit song “If” went viral online, gaining attention when he was just 13 years old. The cover showed off his powerful vocals and signature Fuji style.
Destiny Boy began his career at T2 Boys Studios in Agege, where he worked as a backup dancer for the famous Fuji musician Pasuma. He also gained recognition by performing covers of songs by artists like Tekno, 2Baba, 9ice, Humblesmith, and Small Doctor.
After his breakthrough, he released several hit songs, including Lamba, One Transaction, Gbese, Billion Dollar, Mio Gbonkankan, and Lowkey, which helped establish him as one of the most promising young artists in Nigeria and made him a household name.
Destiny Boy’s personal life also drew public attention. In November 2024, he announced the birth of his first child with his partner and shared the happy news with fans online.
The circumstances around Destiny Boy’s death are still unclear and have caused controversy. Unverified videos believed to show his final moments have circulated online, including clips where he appeared to be vomiting blood before collapsing. These videos caused widespread speculation, with some people suggesting substance abuse, while others made unproven claims about poisoning or ritual involvement.
In one video, he is seen lying in the back of a vehicle with cotton wool in his nostrils and ears. None of these claims have been confirmed, and no official medical report or autopsy has been released.
The lack of clear information has led to reactions from both the public and the music industry. After Destiny Boy’s death, Ruger questioned why no autopsy had been done and called for a proper investigation. He wrote, “Bruh people will just post that someone has died and everyone will move on. Wtf caused his death, who was he with, what was the boy eating or drinking. No autopsy, NOTHING!!!! We just have to accept that he’s dead. My God RIP Destiny Boy.”
Destiny Boy’s death has also brought attention to the pressure young artists face, the dangers of early fame, and the need for better support systems in the entertainment industry.
In a past social media post, Destiny Boy wrote, “Either I make this money or I die young, money must be made.” Many people now see these words in a different light, given the controversy surrounding his death.
