The burial of late gospel singer Bunmi Akinnaanu, popularly known as Omije Ojumi, has been cancelled following unresolved issues within her family.
The update was confirmed by gospel musician Lanre Alewilese, a member of the burial planning committee, in a statement shared on Instagram. According to him, all plans previously made for the singer’s final rites have been called off.
“This is to inform you that all plans and arrangements for the burial of our late sister and colleague, Lady Evangelist Bunmi Akinnaanu a.k.a Omije Ojumi, by the burial planning committee has been cancelled totally,” Alewilese wrote. He added that the decision became necessary due to “issues arising from and within her family.”
The committee also apologised to the public for the sudden change, expressing regret over any inconvenience caused.
Before the cancellation, the burial committee had announced a two-day programme in honour of the singer, with several memorial activities planned ahead of her interment. Those arrangements are now suspended, with no new date communicated.
Omije Ojumi passed away on January 12 after battling a prolonged leg ailment. She was widely known in Nigeria’s gospel music community for her song Omije Ojumi and her work as a worship minister.
The family and burial committee are yet to announce fresh details regarding her funeral.
