Two years after Mohbad‘s tragic passing in September 2023, Naira Marley, CEO of Marlian Records and the late singer’s former boss, has finally broken his silence in a highly anticipated YouTube video titled “My Side of the Story.”

The controversial Afrobeats star, whose real name is Azeez Fashola, faced intense public scrutiny and allegations following the death of his former signee Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, at age 27.

In his statement, Naira Marley revealed that he was in Amsterdam when Mohbad passed away and only learned about it through social media. The revelation comes after months of speculation and public criticism that linked him to the circumstances surrounding Mohbad’s death.

The relationship between the two artists had been strained before Mohbad’s passing. In October 2022, Mohbad publicly accused his former label boss of physical assault, claiming he was being mistreated under Marlian Records. He subsequently terminated his contract with the label.

The announcement to speak out comes nearly two years after being heavily criticized over the tragic death, with fans and critics alike waiting for his version of events. A court ruling in February 2025 cleared Naira Marley and two others of any involvement in Mohbad’s death, providing legal vindication for the embattled artist.

The YouTube video has generated significant attention across Nigerian social media platforms and among music fans who have been following the controversial case.

Mohbad’s death in September 2023 sparked widespread outrage and calls for justice, with many in the Nigerian music industry and beyond demanding answers about the circumstances surrounding his passing. The case had remained a subject of public discourse, with various investigations and testimonies being conducted.
