It was a grand ceremony as Nigerian athletes led by Lauritta Onye, Nigeria’s flag bearer at this year’s Paralympics, represented Nigeria at the parade of athletes at the 2024 Paris Paralympics opening ceremony held at the Place de la Concorde on Wednesday, August 28, 2024.

For the 17th edition of the Paralympics, 4,000 athletes worldwide will compete for 547 medals across 22 sports, with Nigeria represented by 23 athletes – Nine of these athletes are in powerlifting, eight in table tennis, five in athletics and two in badminton.

This is the ninth Paralympics Nigeria has taken part in since Nigeria debuted in the sports event at the 1992 Summer Paralympics in Barcelona, with six male athletes competing in track and field, powerlifting, and table tennis. At the 1992 Paralympics, Adeoye Ajibola won two gold medals in sprint, which earned him a Guinness Book of Records for his 100-metre sprint which he completed in 10.72 seconds. Nigeria also won another medal with Monday Emoghawve who got gold in powerlifting.

These Paralympians’ efforts and team spirit have been passed on through the nine editions Nigeria has participated in the Paralympics.

Since Nigeria’s Paralympics debut, athletes at the sporting event have amassed 80 medals, comprising 40 gold, 19 silver, and 21 bronze medals, with prospects to win more at this year’s event.

The Paralympics is set to run for 11 days from August 28 to September 8, and you can catch up on all games and analysis on the Paralympics across SuperSport channel 199 on DStv and GOtv.
