NFF set to hire ex-Cameroon coach Toni Conceicao as Finidi’s boss to reignite Nigeria’s World Cup hopes – reports

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) plans to appoint a foreign technical adviser for the Super Eagles in the coming days, Soccernet.ng reports.

This decision was made during an executive committee meeting on Thursday, June 14.

The NFF has not commented on the future of current coach Finidi George. The federation expressed concerns about the attitude of some Super Eagles players towards national duties and pledged to find more players for the team.

Following the national team’s poor performance in recent World Cup qualifiers, the NFF’s decision puts Finidi George’s position at risk, though no official statement has been made about his contract.

Finidi, who has managed the team for two matches, has yet to secure a win, drawing with South Africa at home and losing to the Benin Republic away.

In an emergency meeting, the NFF asked Nigerians for patience and outlined three resolutions. They aim to ensure the Super Eagles qualify for the World Cup by hiring a foreign technical adviser and scouting more dedicated Nigerian players.

Conceicao, former head coach of Cameroon, showed interest in the role after Jose Peseiro resigned in February. Initially, the NFF chose local coach Finidi George instead.

Conceicao has been out of work since leaving the Cameroon job in 2022. He was interested in returning to Cameroon but missed out on the position.

The 62-year-old has significant experience in African football, having guided Cameroon to a third-place finish at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
