Ligue 1: Coach Michel Der Zakarian blames Montpellier stars for Akor Adams’ goal drought pre-Lorient

The Nigerian forward hit the French top flight with a bang but his fire has dimmed in recent days

Montpellier head coach Michel Der Zakarian has absolved Akor Adams of any fault following his recent barren run in front of goal, Soccernet.ng reports.

Adams arrived Montpellier from Norway’s Lillestrom in the summer and wasted little time in making an excellent impact.

The 23-year-old forward bagged a stunning brace on his Ligue debut against Le Havre and made it three goals in two games in Montpellier’s excellent 1-4 victory at Lyon on August 19.

The goals have dried up for Adams since with the striker failing to find the net against Reims, Lille, Strasbourg, and most recently Rennes.

Coach Zakarian believes Adams have been unlucky in front of goal but the Montpellier gaffer also acknowledges that needs to be better served by his teammates.

And ahead of their Ligue 1 clash against FC Lorient on Sunday, Zakarian has backed the Nigerian attacker to get back to scoring ways.

“We knew it would take time to adapt to Akor Adams,” Zakarian said, as per Allezpaillade

“Our surprise was to see him score immediately (he arrived) but that’s part of football.

“He must adapt but the others must also want to play with him at times. We rewatched the Rennes match, he made a lot of good calls but he was not served.

“The players who are in possession of the ball must have a different reading of the game, they must see things and must want to give him the ball, especially in the depth.

“You have to find the right synchronization between the servers and the demand but Akor makes the calls.”

Montpellier are in 14th place on the French league table with six points from six matches but only three points separate them from Le Havre in seventh position.
