Since Nigerian Idol came back in 2021 with its sixth season, no female contestant has won the music show, despite the great competitors amongst the contestants who have graced the show. In 2021, Kingdom won, and the next season Progress won. However, this season is taking a different turn.
Among the top five contestants scheduled to take the next stage, there are three females – Precious Mac, Goodness, and Quest. Although the men seem to stand a better chance at making it to the finals, considering that a majority of the voting public see them as better performers and have challenged themselves with their performances than most of the women, one, however, stands out – Precious Mac.
When she auditioned, she immediately stood out for her name. Most people in the music competition world know ‘The Mac Sisters’ to be vocal powerhouses with attitude and the right amount of talent to win a show, but Precious is more than her surname.
From her performance of Alicia Keys’ ‘No One’ to her April 23, 2023, show stopping performance of Clean Bandit’s ‘Rockabye,’ she has proven that she is one to watch out for every week. In Simi’s words, the way Precious enunciates and performs her songs makes you want to believe every word she is singing. She is simply a performer.
However, there is competition. There are guys like Ose Daniel and Victory Gabakara who have also gotten to improve with every performance, and if predictions are right, the top three contestants should be – Precious Mac, Ose Daniel, and Victory Gbakara.
Considering the fact that the competition is based on voting power, there is an unpredictability that comes with the show because one performance is enough to change public opinion. In season seven, most people seemed to always root for ‘The Baby Dragon’ Itohan, Zadok, and Jordan, but after Progress’ show stopping performance of ‘Bang Bang,’ his faith as the winner was immediately sealed.
With performers like Chisom, who most considered one of the best performers of the season getting evicted, and Constance, who had a huge following before she joined the show, leaving the show, it has almost become impossible to predict the direction of the show because most of the female contestants might just be the ones leaving next week.
However, every year we’ve had women who have been vocal powerhouses and performers. In Season Seven, we had women like Faith, Banty, and Itohan. In Season Six, we had women like Faith Mac, Akunna, and Beyonce, but during those seasons, the female contestants never made it to the top two.
With Precious Mac’s trajectory and if she manages to amass enough votes to make it past the double eviction at the Sunday Live shows, she might just be breaking a Nigerian Idol pattern. Considering how the Netng audience has voted for their best performers since the show started, Precious Mac and Ose Daniel seem like the contestants who have a guaranteed spot.
As much as it will be nice to see a woman win this season, it will also not be out of place if a man wins also, considering the fact that they’ve also been putting on a show. In conclusion, may the best man win.
