Zaidu Sanusi to Leeds explained: Porto’s contract call sets the clock

Super Eagles defender Zaidu Sanusi is reportedly on Leeds United's January shortlist, and whether FC Porto offer him a new contract could decide how the story ends.

Football Insider reported on 29 October that Leeds are weighing a January move for the Porto left-back, as they want more competition for Gabriel Gudmundsson. Nothing has been confirmed by either club, and this is an analysis of what the report means, not a report of a deal.

Sanusi joined Porto in 2020 and his contract runs to the end of 2026/27. He started 11 league matches for Porto last season and has five starts so far this season, and he has 29 Champions League appearances for the club.

Why the contract clock matters

According to Football Insider, Leeds believe talks could be straightforward if Porto fail to agree an extension. The same report says Leeds have monitored him for some time and considered a move in each of the last two windows.

In April, Afrik-Foot relayed a report from A BOLA that an extension was likely if he kept his form. That report is now seven months old, and the two stories point in different directions.

Analysis: January sale or new deal?

With a year and a half left on his deal, Porto face a choice. If they extend, Leeds would need a bigger offer, and a move may wait. If they do not, Porto could face losing him for nothing in 2027, which would make a sale more attractive.

The picture is complicated by his playing time. Five league starts this season suggest he is not an automatic choice.

The next signal will be whether Porto open contract talks before the window opens. Our Calvin Bassey piece shows how a contract clock can drive interest, and the January registration explainer covers what the window allows.
