Nigeria has selected ‘Dear Ajayi’, a drama directed and produced by Damilola Orimogunje, as its official submission for the International Feature Film category of the 2027 Academy Awards.
The decision was made by the Nigerian Official Selection Committee (NOSC), putting the film on the path to potentially becoming Nigeria’s next contender at the Oscars.
Set in 1990s Nigeria, Dear Ajayi follows two estranged sisters whose lives collide when they are forced to live together while caring for their paralysed mother. Their contrasting personalities further deepen the tension: one is a devoted Christian, while the other is an aspiring singer determined to live on her own terms.
The film stars Bimbo Akintola, Uzoamaka Power, Tosin Adeyemi and Baaj Adebule, among others.
However, Nigeria’s selection is not an automatic ticket to the Oscars. The film must still undergo review by the Academy’s International Feature Film executive committee before it can be accepted and considered for the final shortlist.
The 99th Academy Awards are scheduled to hold on March 14, 2027, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles.
Nigeria did not submit a film for the 2026 Oscars, its third absence from the international feature film race in five years.
For the 2025 Oscars, Nigeria selected Mai Martaba, an epic Hausa-language film, while Mami Wata represented the country at the 96th Academy Awards.
In 2021, The Milkmaid made history as the first Nigerian film accepted into the Oscars’ International Feature Film category, although it did not advance to the final shortlist.
