Taylor Swift becomes most-awarded artist in MTV VMAs history as Madonna wins Artist of the Year

Taylor Swift made MTV Video Music Awards history on Sunday, becoming the most successful artist in the ceremony’s history after taking home the coveted Video of the Year award.

Swift entered the night tied with Beyoncé on 30 VMA wins. She moved ahead after winning the night’s top prize for the dramatic visuals accompanying “The Fate of Ophelia,” from her 2025 album The Life of a Showgirl.

The 36-year-old pop superstar also received the inaugural Artist Director award after writing and directing the lavish music video herself.

Swift dedicated the new honour to Dolly Parton, calling her the “ultimate showgirl” and saying audiences were “very lucky” to have shared the planet with the legendary country star.

But Swift wasn’t the only major winner of the night.

Madonna, who arrived with a leading 13 nominations, won Artist of the Year, as well as Best Dance and Best Collaboration alongside Sabrina Carpenter for their hit “Bring Your Love.”

The 68-year-old pop icon reflected on her extraordinary VMA history while accepting Artist of the Year, recalling her appearance at the very first ceremony 43 years ago.

She also spoke about spending the past year and a half rediscovering herself and creating the music she wanted to make.

Madonna’s performance marked her first VMAs appearance since her infamous 2003 onstage kiss with Britney Spears. She was joined by Carpenter, while British star Charli XCX also made an appearance.

The collaboration with Carpenter almost didn’t happen. Madonna revealed that after waiting five days for a response from Carpenter’s team, she eventually contacted the singer directly.

Carpenter joked that her team does respond to messages—but admitted that she responds faster herself.

BLACKPINK’s Lisa also celebrated a landmark victory, becoming the first Asian solo artist to win Best Pop at the VMAs.

The Thai singer won for “Dream,” which features Japanese actor Kentaro Sakaguchi in its music video, beating competition from stars including Swift, Ariana Grande and Olivia Rodrigo. An emotional Lisa thanked her fans, known as Lillies, telling them she “wouldn’t be here without you guys.” British artists also made their mark on the ceremony.

Raye and Sienna Spiro performed, with Spiro taking home Best New Artist. PinkPantheress won Best Art Direction alongside Sweden’s Zara Larsson for “Stateside.”

The ceremony, hosted by rapper Snoop Dogg in Los Angeles, also featured tributes to Dolly Parton and George Michael.

Elsewhere, BTS won Best Group and Song of the Year for “Swim,” while Olivia Rodrigo’s “The Cure” took Best Alternative.

Rock legends Nirvana were also honoured with the Video Vanguard Award.

Swift added another major moment to the evening by debuting the video for her new song “Patient Zero,” starring Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson. The dark gothic thriller is her first music video since her marriage to NFL star Travis Kelce.

The song is one of four new tracks featured on The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore, released last week.
