The Super Falcons of Nigeria's hopes of qualifying for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup are in jeopardy following their 1-0 loss to Cameroon in the quarterfinals of the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations, Soccernet.ng reports.
Nigeria entered the clash against the Indomitable Lionesses on Sunday as heavy favorites. In all 13 previous editions of the WAFCON, their worst finish had been the semifinals.

However, all hope is not lost. The Super Falcons can still reach the Mundial, but they now face a significantly longer and harder road to get there.
How the Super Falcons Can Qualify for the 2027 World Cup

With the Super Falcons unable to qualify through the traditional WAFCON route, they must now battle their way through the playoffs.
First, they have to secure a spot in the Inter-confederations playoffs by defeating South Africa on Thursday. Africa has two playoff slots; the winner between Nigeria and South Africa, alongside the winner of the tie between Ghana and Ivory Coast, will advance to the global stage.

The Inter-confederations playoff tournament will feature six teams in its first phase: two from Asia, one from South America, one from Oceania, and the two African representatives.
This opening phase will be played in November and December at a neutral venue. The top two teams from this group will then progress to the final playoff phase at another neutral venue in February 2027, where they will be joined by heavyweights from CONCACAF, CONMEBOL, and UEFA.

These six teams will be drawn into three single-elimination paths, with the winners of each path securing the final tickets to the World Cup.
