“Talk and joke around” – Werder Bremen star Puertas opens up on Victor Boniface’s real attitude

Werder Bremen midfielder Cameron Puertas has revealed some interesting attributes of Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface that make him a great teammate, Soccernet.ng reports.

Boniface has had a torrid year so far. Last summer, he failed to secure his big move to Italian giants AC Milan due to concerns over his fitness, eventually joining Werder Bremen on a season-long loan deal.

When the deal was finalized, he was expected to become the club's talisman immediately. Even former coach Steffen Horst admitted he was impressed with the Super Eagles star. However, that did not guarantee him minutes, as his time on the pitch remained heavily restricted.

In December, it was revealed that Boniface had been struggling with a knee problem carried over from Bayer Leverkusen, which was hampering his performance. In fact, he had been playing through significant pain before undergoing surgery in January.

At first, he was expected to spend the remainder of the season on the sidelines. However, he returned to training earlier this month and is now expected to return to action before the end of the campaign.

Werder Bremen is the second club where Cameron Puertas has played alongside Victor Boniface, as the two were previously teammates at Royale Union SG.

Now, with the Super Eagles star set to return to action soon, the Spanish midfielder has expressed his enthusiasm at the prospect of sharing the pitch with Boniface again.

Puertas also highlighted the specific qualities that make the Nigerian forward such a vital asset to the locker room.

“Victor could really help the team. He has qualities that not many players possess,” Puertas said about Boniface.

“It would be a great bonus if he could be with us again this season.”

“We talk every day and joke around. Boni is really keen to help the team. He’s a team player who wants to be ready and available. I would really like to see him get some playing time.”

Injuries have affected Boniface's trajectory a lot. Just three seasons ago, he was in the running for the Bundesliga Golden Boot alongside Harry Kane, but recurring fitness issues have hindered his growth, thereby making him a less certain option for top clubs.

Given his difficult year at Bremen, it is unlikely the club will pursue another loan deal. In the meantime, he has two years left on his contract at parent club Bayer Leverkusen. This upcoming summer will undoubtedly be a pivotal moment for his career.
