In a landmark development poised to revolutionise African storytelling and cross-border creative collaboration, Kunle Afolayan Production (KAP) Group has officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Republic of Benin.
This strategic partnership, initiated by a high-level invitation from the Beninese Presidency, aims to transform the audio-visual and film production landscape across the region.
The signing ceremony, held at the KAP Hub in Lagos – Kunle Afolayan’s renowned creative centre – signifies another major Pan-African collaboration for the KAP Group. This move further solidifies the Group’s pivotal role in fostering strategic creative alliances across the continent, all geared towards strengthening African cinema, empowering its youth, and developing globally competitive creative infrastructure.
This historic alliance is built upon a shared vision to leverage the immense power of cinema, youth development initiatives, and creative enterprise. The goal is to drive cultural diplomacy, stimulate economic growth, and significantly enhance Africa’s global creative influence.
Before the formal signing, acclaimed filmmaker and KAP Group CEO, Kunle Afolayan, alongside Executive Director Seun Soyinka, led a high-powered delegation to the Republic of Benin last month.
Extensive consultations were held with senior government officials and key stakeholders within Benin’s audio-visual and cinematography sectors. Discussions centred on establishing sustainable frameworks to elevate local content creation, bolster technical capacity, and position the Republic of Benin as a burgeoning hub for film and creative excellence in Africa.
The new partnership is structured around three core pillars, including the co-production of films that authentically tell African stories and expand the global reach of the continent’s cinematic narratives, comprehensive training programs across all facets of filmmaking and creative production for youth, and the development of a World-class film city in Ouidah, Benin.
These three pillars will significantly benefit from the existing expertise within the KAP Group’s subsidiaries, including KAP Motion Pictures, KAP Film & Television Academy, and KAP Film Village & Resort.
As part of the official program from February 19-22, the Beninese delegation is scheduled to tour KAP Group’s cutting-edge production hub in Lagos, as well as the pioneering KAP Film Village & Resort in Igbojaye-Komu, Oyo State. The Film Village is widely recognized as a model for integrated film production, training, and cultural tourism in Africa.
Kunle Afolayan described this collaboration as “a defining moment for African cinema, where visionary leadership, cultural authenticity, and creative enterprise converge to project our stories, our people, and our creative strength to the world in the most compelling way.”
Sinatou Saka, Special Adviser to the President of the Republic for Media and Audio-Visual Affairs, also expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “We are finally happy to be working in partnership with Kunle Afolayan, especially in the area of capacity building.”
Both parties have characterised this agreement as the genesis of a long-term strategic alliance, dedicated to elevating the standards of film production, creative education, and cultural expression throughout Africa.
