After a triumphant Nigerian premiere, the high-octane action thriller “Son of the Soil” is heading to the United Kingdom for its official UK premiere on Friday, December 5, 2025, at Odeon Greenwich in London.
The film, which has already captivated Nigerian audiences since its theatrical release on November 21, marks a significant milestone for Nollywood as it expands its reach into international markets with a franchise-ready action saga filmed entirely in Lagos.
Directed by British-Chinese filmmaker Chee Keong Cheung and starring British-Nigerian actor Razaaq Adoti, “Son of the Soil” tells the gripping story of Zion Ladejo, a former Nigerian Special Ops paratrooper living in exile who is forced to return home after his sister’s brutal murder. What he finds is a community overrun by a violent drug cartel, setting the stage for an emotionally charged campaign for justice and redemption.
The UK premiere represents a strategic expansion for the film, which is being distributed in the UK and Ireland through a partnership between Nile Entertainment and Sovereign Films. Following the London premiere on Friday, the film will roll out across UK and Irish cinemas before expanding to key African markets and eventually global streaming platforms.
For Adoti, who wrote the screenplay and serves as producer alongside his starring role, the journey from Nigeria to the UK has been deeply meaningful. “Every film I’ve been a part of has meant something special to me, but with ‘Son of the Soil,’ it is so much more than just a job,” he said. “It feels like a ‘calling’ or a ‘purpose’ that touches my very spirit. I hope that I can make the people of Nigeria and Africa proud with this humble offering.”
The film features an impressive cast of Nollywood talent, including Africa Movie Academy Award Best Actress nominee Iretiola Doyle, veteran actress Patience Ozokwo, Sunshine Rosman, Philip Asaya, Damilola Ogunsi, Taye Arimoro, and Toyin Oshionke.
Produced by Sovereign Films CEO Andreas Roald (co-producer of Palme d’Or winner Triangle of Sadness), Ioanna Karavela, Chee Keong Cheung, and Razaaq Adoti, the film was shot in association with Wingonia Ikpi’s Boxonia Blueprint, whose credits include Nigerian box-office hits Ijakumo and Sugar Rush 2.
Director Cheung emphasised the collaborative spirit that defined the production. “As a filmmaker, I’ve always wanted to work in Africa—but not just visit, collaborate,” he said. “Filming in Lagos with this cast and crew was an unforgettable experience. What we created together is raw, human and explosive. This is action with soul.”
The UK premiere is part of a broader vision to position African action cinema on the global stage. In September 2025, Nile Entertainment and Action Xtreme signed a first-look deal to co-produce and distribute a slate of action films and series across Africa, with plans to bring talent development programs focusing on stunt training, action choreography, and production craft directly to Nigeria.
Moses Babatope, founder of Nile Entertainment, described the film’s journey from Nigerian cinemas to London as a testament to the quality and universal appeal of African storytelling. “This is about more than just filmmaking,” he said. “It’s about building an ecosystem where African action cinema can thrive and reach audiences around the world.”
Andreas Roald, CEO of Sovereign Films, expressed confidence in the film’s crossover potential. “We wanted a distributor that would go the distance with this film, and with Nile Entertainment, we found a true partner,” he said. “They understand what ‘Son of the Soil’ is about and how to take it to audiences across the continent and the world.”
“Son of the Soil” receives its UK premiere on Friday, December 5, 2025, at Odeon Greenwich, London, before expanding to UK and Irish cinemas nationwide.
