MI Abaga has revealed the story behind his recent collaboration with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and he’s using the spotlight to push for more opportunities for African creatives.

The rapper, who appeared in a viral skit in July alongside Bill Gates, popular skit maker Layi Wasabi, and comedian Broda Shaggi, got the internet buzzing not just for the humor but for the powerful message behind the project.

In a live Instagram session with veteran rapper Mode 9 on Tuesday, September 2, MI Abaga explained that his involvement was much more than just a cameo.

MI praised the Gates Foundation for its global impact, highlighting its work in eradicating diseases like polio. He shared that when the foundation reached out for help on a creative campaign, he saw it as a chance to bridge the gap between global organizations and Africa’s vibrant creative community.

“I’m just trying to connect creatives to opportunities,” he said. “If an organization needs a video, a project, or whatever, we have the talent here. We organize it and get it done.

“It’s so difficult to be a creative in Africa and get connections,” he said.

The rapper also expressed his joy that Nigerian youths are now speaking their minds boldly.

Mode 9, a pioneer in Nigerian hip-hop, showed full support for MI’s mission. In a lighthearted moment, He said: “Get Mode 9 the bag, man!”.
