The 77th Emmy Awards, held Sunday night at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles and broadcast live on CBS, saw Adolescence emerge as the biggest winner of the evening, sweeping six major awards and making Emmy history in the process. The limited series not only claimed the award for Best Limited or Anthology Series but also propelled its young breakout star Owen Cooper into the record books as the youngest male actor to ever win an Emmy in any acting category, taking home Best Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.

Stephen Graham, who served as executive producer, writer, and star of Adolescence, had a triumphant night with three wins: Best Actor in a Limited Series, Best Writing (shared with Jack Thorne), and the top series honor as a producer. Director Philip Barantini also earned acclaim for his work on the show, winning Best Directing for a Limited Series or Movie. Erin Doherty rounded out the series’ haul with her win for Best Supporting Actress.

Seth Rogen had a strong showing as well, collecting four Emmys for his comedy series The Studio, including Best Comedy Series and Best Actor in a Comedy. Rogen also shared Best Directing with Evan Goldberg and Best Writing with Goldberg, Peter Huyck, Alex Gregory, and Frida Perez. The Pitt took home three Emmys, including Best Drama Series, with Noah Wyle winning Best Actor in a Drama and Katherine LaNasa scoring a surprise win for Best Supporting Actress, beating out four cast members from The White Lotus.

In another unexpected moment, Jeff Hiller won Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy for Somebody Somewhere, outshining first-time nominee Harrison Ford. The Late Show with Stephen Colbert earned Best Talk Series in an emotional victory, coming just two months after CBS announced the show’s cancellation. As Colbert and his team took the stage, they received a standing ovation and chants of “Stephen! Stephen!” echoed throughout the theater.

History was made once again when Tramell Tillman became the first Black man to win Best Supporting Actor in a Drama for Severance, while his co-star Britt Lower won Best Actress in a Drama Series. Jean Smart won Best Actress in a Comedy for her role in Hacks, with co-star Hannah Einbinder winning Best Supporting Actress. Cristin Milioti earned Best Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for The Penguin.

In the reality and variety categories, The Traitors triumphed as Best Reality Competition Program. Last Week Tonight With John Oliver swept both Best Writing and Best Scripted Variety Series, beating Saturday Night Live, although SNL50: The Anniversary Special won Best Variety Special (Live), bringing the show’s all-time Emmy total to 112 and Lorne Michaels’ personal count to 22.

Behind the scenes, Adam Randall took home Best Directing for a Drama Series for Slow Horses, while Dan Gilroy won Best Writing for a Drama Series for Andor. The evening was hosted by comedian Nate Bargatze and featured a parade of celebrity presenters, including Stephen Colbert, Jeff Probst, and Sydney Sweeney. Two mother-daughter acting duos also took the stage: Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel of Gilmore Girls, and Wednesday’s Jenna Ortega and Catherine Zeta-Jones. A nostalgic Law & Order cast reunion also thrilled the crowd.

Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen received the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award, and the show raised $350,000 for the Boys and Girls Club.

Ahead of the main broadcast, most technical and behind-the-scenes categories were awarded during the Creative Arts Emmy Awards on September 6 and 7.
