Since its inception in 2013, the annual Nigerian Entertainment Conference (NECLive) has seen performances by Nigerian artistes, many of which were unexpected. These spontaneous performances added something special to the event, delighting attendees and often stealing the show.

Ahead of the 2025 edition of the conference, scheduled for November 28 to 30, here’s a look at five past performances that took us by surprise.

D’Banj

When D’Banj, born Daniel Oladapo Olabanjo, a veteran entertainer in the Nigerian music scene, climbed onstage to deliver a speech on content being the crude (oil) at 2016’s NECLive4, we couldn’t have imagined that he would finish things off with a performance.

But that is exactly what he did. He sang multiple personal hits such as “Emergency,” “Oliver Twist,” and “Why Me.” The crowd was equally as enthusiastic, requesting songs and singing along.

Timi Dakolo

Another surprise performance at NECLive4 came from Idols West Africa’s first ever winner, singer Timi Dakolo. He delivered a powerful, moving rendition of his song “Great Nation.” It was an unexpected but warmly received highlight of the event.

    K1 De Ultimate

Renowned Nigerian Fuji musician King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as K1 De Ultimate, gave a lively performance during NECLive5 that had attendees rising from their seats to dance. One enthusiastic lady went onstage to spray the musician with money.

      Simi

At NECLive6 in 2018, singer-songwriter Simi, who was a guest panellist at the event, gave a surprise brief performance of her hit single “Joromi.”

      Kabusa Oriental Choir

Kabusa Oriental Choir, a Nigerian choir famous for their choir-style, often humorous renditions of popular songs, was at NECLive7 in 2019. The group showed up unexpectedly onstage in their signature flowing garments, and gave a hilarious performance that had audience members laughing.
