Acclaimed Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has delivered a powerful message to young women, urging them to prioritize wisdom—not desperation—when choosing a life partner.

Speaking at a recent student event, the 47-year-old literary icon and feminist voice stressed the lasting impact of this deeply personal decision, warning against the societal pressure that often pushes women into unhealthy relationships.

It’s really important who you choose. It’s really important. Young women, choose wisely,” Adichie emphasized, her voice carrying the weight of both personal experience and societal insight.

The award-winning author of Half of a Yellow Sun and Americanah was candid in her remarks, particularly about the common pressures faced by women to marry quickly or conform to cultural expectations.

“Sometimes, as young women, you can tell that the person you’re with is not really a good person, but you’re desperate to get married,” she said. Don’t settle. Be very careful who you choose.”

She went on to highlight the life-changing impact a supportive partner can have: If you choose somebody who’s kind, supportive, it will make all the difference.”

Reflecting on her own marriage to Nigerian doctor Ivara Esege, whom she wed in 2009, Adichie added, I can tell you that I chose well—there are some good men left. The couple shares three children: a daughter and twin boys.
