The long-standing narrative that Lil Wayne helped launch Drake’s meteoric rise is widely accepted in the hip-hop world, but a new voice is challenging the extent of that credit, and it’s coming from inside the family.
Lil Wayne’s son, who goes by Lil Novi, sent shockwaves through social media this week during a livestream in which he boldly claimed his father did more than discover Drake—he allegedly penned a significant portion of the Canadian superstar’s lyrics.
“My dad wrote most of [Drake’s] sh*t,” Novi declared. “If it wasn’t for my pops, there wouldn’t be no Drake.”
The statement quickly ignited debate across hip-hop circles, raising eyebrows and reviving long-dormant questions about ghostwriting and authenticity in the rap game. While the idea of behind-the-scenes writing help isn’t new, Novi’s comments have reopened old wounds—most notably the 2015 feud between Meek Mill and Drake, when Meek accused him of using ghostwriter Quentin Miller for his project If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late.
Novi, however, took things a step further. He claimed Lil Wayne was the driving creative force behind not only Drake’s early work but also critically acclaimed albums like Take Care and Views—a serious accusation that, if true, would rewrite much of the narrative surrounding Drake’s artistry.
Critics were quick to point out that Novi, born after Drake’s 2009 breakout So Far Gone, wasn’t even around for the formative years of Drake’s career, raising questions about the accuracy of his claims and whether they stem from personal loyalty or a bid for viral attention.
Still, his words have struck a chord. The hip-hop community has long wrestled with questions of authorship and credibility. Ghostwriting has historically been a taboo subject in rap, where authenticity is currency and lyrical prowess defines an artist’s worth.
