Nigerian rapper Ruggedman, whose real name is Michael Stephens, has revealed the personal reasons behind his decision not to have children.
In a candid interview on TVC’s Your View Pidgin, the 51-year-old rapper shared a glimpse into his private life, explaining how he made a vow during his younger years to never father a child outside of marriage.
The legendary hitmaker of “Baraje” emphasized that he believes parenthood is a significant responsibility that requires commitment and love between both parents. He expressed that bringing a child into the world is a decision that must be made with someone he truly loves.
“I am not currently in any relationship nor am I married, and I do not have a child yet,” Ruggedman shared. “When I was much younger, I vowed never to have a child out of wedlock. Sometimes, I wonder whether I made the right or wrong decision, but I still believe that it takes a lot from both parties. And for me, to do that, it has to be with someone I love.”
The rapper, who hails from Ohafia in Abia State, admitted that while the decision has occasionally made him question himself, his values around love and commitment remain steadfast.
Ruggedman, born on September 20, 1973, and a graduate of political science from Lagos State University (LASU), began his musical career in 1999. Over the years, he has built a reputation not only for his groundbreaking music but also for his outspoken views on Nigeria’s socio-political landscape. With his record label, Rugged Records, he has solidified his place as one of the pioneers of Nigerian hip hop.
