Last night, the Golden Globes ceremony celebrated powerful performances and groundbreaking storytelling, with Emilia Perez and The Brutalist dominating the film categories and Shogun and Baby Reindeer leading the TV side.

Emilia Perez, an operatic musical that tells the captivating story of a Mexican drug lord who undergoes a gender transformation, emerged as the biggest winner with three major wins. The film was awarded Best Comedy or Musical, Best Non-English Language Film, and Best Song. Its star, Zoe Saldana, earned Best Supporting Actress for her remarkable performance.

During the ceremony, trans actress Karla Sofia Gascon, who played a key role in the film, gave an emotional acceptance speech, declaring: “The light always wins over darkness. You can maybe put us in jail. You can beat us up. But you never can take away our soul or existence or identity… I am who I am. Not who you want.”

On the film front, The Brutalist was another standout, claiming Best Drama, Best Actor for Adrien Brody, and Best Director for Brady Corbet. Brody’s portrayal of a Hungarian architect rebuilding his life in postwar America captivated the jury and audiences alike. Brody, joined by co-stars Felicity Jones and Guy Pearce, expressed his gratitude, marking the night as a personal achievement in a career spanning decades.

In other acting categories, Kieran Culkin received Best Supporting Actor for his role in A Real Pain, while Demi Moore, in a moving speech, accepted her first-ever Golden Globe for her 45-year career. At 62, Moore was honoured for her performance in The Substance, reflecting on how the industry once dismissed her as a “popcorn actress” but how The Substance gave her a chance to prove otherwise.

Meanwhile, Wicked, the prequel to The Wizard of Oz, made waves. Despite being the talk of the year, it missed out on acting awards for stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. Director Jon M. Chu, however, won praise for delivering a “radical act of optimism” through the film’s visuals and message of empowerment.

In television, Shogun, a Japanese historical drama, claimed the lion’s share of awards, including Best Drama and three acting accolades for Hiroyuki Sanada, Anna Sawai, and Tadanobu Asano. This sweeping epic captivated both critics and audiences, reflecting its global appeal.

Baby Reindeer, the dark and critically acclaimed limited series, also earned major honours, including Best Limited Series and a Best Supporting Actress award for Jessica Gunning.

The series, which follows a comedian and barman stalked by an older woman, is lauded for its exploration of uncomfortable truths about human nature. Creator and star Richard Gadd spoke about the series’ success, explaining that audiences were “crying out for something that spoke to the painful inconsistencies of being human.”

On the TV front, Colin Farrell’s portrayal of the iconic Batman villain Penguin in The Penguin earned him the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Limited Series. Farrell, wearing heavy prosthetics to transform into the character, joked on stage that he “did it all by myself,” before thanking his colleagues and team.

Hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser, the evening was full of wit and sharp humour, touching on everything from Hollywood’s obsession with weight loss drugs like Ozempic to the failed A-list efforts to sway the 2024 U.S. election.

Glaser’s opening monologue set the tone for the evening, which also saw a heavy security presence surrounding the Beverly Hilton Hotel due to heightened concerns following recent events, including a vehicle attack in New Orleans and a Cybertruck explosion in Las Vegas.
