Alex Iwobi: Former Barcelona and Tottenham striker praises Nigerian star’s ‘terrific’ season at Fulham

Former England striker Gary Lineker has lavished praise on Alex Iwobi for his outstanding performances at Fulham this season, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Nigerian midfielder has become a pivotal figure in Marco Silva’s side, as the west Londoners enjoy one of their best starts to a Premier League campaign in recent memory.

Iwobi, 28, has already equalled his highest Premier League goal tally of five, with nearly half the season left to play.

The Super Eagles playmaker has also contributed three assists, further solidifying his importance to the Cottagers’ European ambitions.

Fulham, who haven’t finished higher than 10th since the 2011-12 season, currently sit eighth in the table, just three points shy of a Europa League spot.

Lineker, speaking on his podcast The Rest is Football, alongside Alan Shearer and Micah Richards, was effusive in his praise.

“Iwobi has had a terrific season. He’s a bit of a journeyman around the Premier League,” the former Barcelona and Tottenham forward remarked.

Iwobi’s transformation under Silva has been remarkable.

Once viewed as a hit-or-miss signing during his Everton days, the midfielder has thrived at Craven Cottage.

His resurgence under Silva is particularly ironic, as it was the Portuguese manager who brought him to Everton in a £28 million move from Arsenal in 2019 – Silva’s final signing for the Toffees.

Despite an underwhelming start at Goodison Park, Iwobi showed flashes of his talent during his latter days with Everton, registering nine goal contributions under Frank Lampard and Sean Dyche.

However, his move to Fulham has unlocked a new level of consistency and confidence in his game.

Iwobi’s return to Goodison Park in October ended in a 1-1 draw, with the midfielder netting an excellent opener for Fulham. In a show of respect for his former club, he chose not to celebrate.
