Napoli-owned striker Victor Osimhen has finally broken his silence after equalling Segun Odegbami’s long-standing goal record for the Super Eagles, Soccernet.ng reports.
The Nigerian forward, who scored his 23rd goal for the national team in their recent encounter against the Cheetahs of Benin, downplayed the significance of the achievement.
Despite matching Odegbami’s 23-goal mark, Osimhen has made it clear that his focus remains on delivering performances that benefit the Super Eagles.
The former LOSC Lille forward also took the opportunity to acknowledge the legendary Rashidi Yekini, who holds the top spot with 37 goals for Nigeria.
“No, I really don’t care about this. I just want to do my job and try to win games, score goals, and provide a lot of assists for my team. And then, if I equal it, that’s it. But that doesn’t take away the fact that Rashidi Yekini is the greatest striker the Super Eagles have ever had because this record stood for a very long time and is still standing. We should give that man his flowers and also celebrate him.” he told Making of Champions.
Osimhen’s commitment to the national team and his relentless drive to achieve more on the international stage make him a key player for the Super Eagles, who are gearing up for their final 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying clash against Rwanda.
