ANFA Special Award: Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong honoured in Egypt

Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has been honoured at the African Nations Football Awards ceremony held in Cairo, Egypt, Soccernet.ng reports.

Troost-Ekong won the Special Award for AFCON Performance 2024, following his impressive display at the continental championships in Cote d’Ivoire earlier in the year.

The Al Kholood defender skippered Nigeria to a second-place finish at the Africa Cup of Nations, registering three goals and helping the Super Eagles keep four clean sheets.

For his excellent showing, Troost-Ekong was named the Player of the Tournament – the first defender to pick up the award in over 20 years – and was included in the Team of the Tournament.

With an overall tally of five goals, Troost-Ekong also entered the record books as the highest-scoring defender in the history of the AFCON.

After his recognition at the ANFA ceremony on Saturday night, Troost-Ekong took to his social media account to appreciate Egyptian star Omar Tarek for picking up the award on his behalf.

More awards could still be on the way for Troost-Ekong this year as the former Watford and Udinese ace has been nominated for the CAF African Footballer of the Year.

The 31-year-old centre-back will battle for the prestigious prize with compatriot and Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman as well as eight others.
