The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has launched an investigation into allegations concerning the accommodation of convicted cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky. The inquiry is ongoing, with findings yet to be released.

Abubakar Umar, Deputy Controller of Corrections and Service Public Relations Officer, revealed the details in an interview on Sunday, October 6, in Abuja. Umar emphasized the NCoS’s dedication to rehabilitation and safety through a thorough inmate admission process.

Bobrisky, who was convicted in April for mutilating the naira, is currently serving a six-month sentence. Recent controversy arose after social media influencer and human rights activist Vincent Otse, also known as Very Dark Man (VDM), shared an audio recording in which Bobrisky allegedly claimed to have spent his jail term in a private apartment. In the recording, Bobrisky purportedly mentioned paying N15 million to officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to dismiss money laundering charges against him.

In response to these allegations, the Federal Government inaugurated an independent investigative panel on September 30 to examine claims of corruption and violations of standard operating procedures within the NCoS. The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, emphasized that the committee will also investigate allegations regarding alternative accommodations allegedly provided to Bobrisky.

Umar explained the rigorous admission process for inmates, detailing how each individual undergoes comprehensive assessments to identify security risks and rehabilitation needs. This process involves an admission board that includes the officer in charge, medical officers, and other relevant personnel.

“Upon conviction, every offender is assessed for security risks and their specific needs,” Umar stated. “We determine how to allocate cells based on these evaluations to ensure the safety of all inmates.”

Umar clarified that during Bobrisky’s court proceedings and subsequent admission to the facility, he identified as male. He also noted that the classification process considered various factors, including potential threats to safety within the custodial environment.

“While we ensure that inmates are safe and appropriately housed, the investigation will clarify whether Bobrisky stayed within our facility or elsewhere,” Umar added.
