Why I couldn’t shine under Stefano Pioli – AC Milan forward Chukwueze

Super Eagles forward Samuel Chukwueze has shed light on the challenges he encountered under former AC Milan manager Stefano Pioli, Soccernet.ng reports.

Chukwueze joined the Italian giants from Villarreal CF during the 2023 summer transfer window, marking the end of his successful six-year spell in Spain. However, his transition to Serie A has been far from smooth.

In contrast to his standout performances with Villarreal, where he was a key player, Chukwueze struggled to replicate that form in Milan. Under Pioli’s guidance, the Nigerian winger managed just three assists and one goal in 24 appearances.

Chukwueze attributed his difficulties to his late arrival at the club and his inability to fully convince Pioli of his capabilities.

“I arrived late, at the end of July. It was a bit difficult to convince him; the player in my position was scoring goals. I had a good relationship with Pioli; he’s a fantastic guy and a great coach,” Chukwueze explained.

Despite his best efforts, Chukwueze found it challenging to secure a regular starting spot in his first season, with Pioli often opting to deploy Christian Pulisic in his preferred position.

However, with the arrival of Paulo Fonseca as the new manager at San Siro, Chukwueze has experienced a resurgence.

In a previous report, The Nigerian international credits Fonseca’s trust and clear communication for his renewed confidence and form.

“In a previous report, Chukwueze revealed that Fonseca has played a big role in his revival, as the Portuguese tactician has been in constant communication with him. ‘He only told me one thing: “Samuel, I don’t want to see the Chukwueze from last year. I want the one from Villarreal.” And I said, “Okay, no problem.” It’s like I’ve been reborn; I’m a new player,’ Chukwueze told La Gazzetta, per Milan Post.

As the new season approaches, there is growing optimism that Chukwueze will rediscover his best form and make a significant impact for the Rossoneri, much like he did during his time at Villarreal.
