Ex-Super Eagles captain and coach ‘sad’ Real Madrid beat Borussia Dortmund in Champions League final

Former Super Eagles captain Sunday Oliseh has revealed his hurt at seeing Borussia Dortmund lose to Real Madrid in the final of the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League, Soccernet.ng reports.

Real Madrid secured a record-extending 15th Champions League trophy after beating Dortmund 2-0 inside the Wembley Stadium in London on Saturday night.

Second-half goals from veteran full-back Dani Carvajal and Brazilian forward Vinicius Junior were all Madrid needed to quench Dortmund’s dreams of clinching a second-ever Champions League honour.

During his active playing days, Oliseh was at Dortmund for four years, helping the club win the German Bundesliga title in 2002.

That same year, Oliseh, who won the UEFA Intertoto Cup with Juventus in 1999, suffered the pain of losing a European Cup final, as his Dortmund finished as runners-up in the UEFA Cup.

Still a confessed Dortmund fan, the 49-year-old again watched as the Black and Yellow outplayed Real Madrid in the first half only to see their wastefulness punished after the break.

Oliseh attributed Real Madrid’s triumph to their top-quality players as well as the excellent input of coach Carlo Ancelotti.

The former Super Eagles coach wrote on Twitter:

“Sad that my club BVB Dortmund could not lift the Champions League trophy today after putting up a good fight, but the quality of the Real Madrid players and the tactical and personnel changes Carlo Ancelotti made in the 2nd half made the difference. and Camavinga”

Real Madrid are the most successful club in the history of the Champions League with 15 titles, more than twice as much as their closest challenger.
