“It’s just instinct”– Iheanacho explains match-winning goal for Leicester against Gillingham

Iheanacho’s goal against Gillingham, a bottom-of-the-table League Two team, is to the Foxes’ credit after they had lost many key games since they resumed post-World Cup action.

Nigerian International, Kelechi Iheanacho, has revealed that his instinct was a big factor in scoring the match-winning goal for Leicester City.

With his goal against League Two team Gillingham, the Super Eagles attacker, who has struggled to crack Brendan Rogers’ starting line-up in this campaign, advances the Foxes to the FA Cup fourth round.

Brendan Rogers’ team, which has lately struggled, should credit the Nigerian forward for scoring after being frustrated and given little chances by a well-organized Gillingham side in the first half.

The Super Eagles forward, who was able to score in the 56th minute after Kasey McAteer’s well-placed cross, helped them start the second half more positively.

The Nigerian, however, reflected on his game-winning goal in a post-match interview with the BBC.

“It’s just instinct as a striker,” he said.

“People around the box already, so Vardy was running at the front post, I was thinking he might cut it back, so I just waited around at the edge of the box for the cutback, and then it came to me, and I finished. I thought he might cut it back, and then it was a sweet finish,” he explained.

The Nigerian forward will be hoping for a start when the East Midlands team lock horns with Newcastle in the EFL quarterfinals on Tuesday, January 10, 2023.
