Tuberculosis (TB) is caused by bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis which most often affects the lungs and is spread when people who are sick with TB expel bacteria into the air (e.g., by coughing). Even though TB is preventable, treatable, and curable, it remains one of the top 10 causes of death worldwide, and from a single infectious agent, and accounted for an estimated 1.4 million deaths globally in 2019.
