Nollywood has witnessed a golden age of soap operas, some of which still remain iconic. Some soap opera casts have also become legends for portraying beloved, nostalgic and long-lasting characters.

From the eccentric playboy in ‘Papa Ajasco’ to the torturous cook in ‘Fuji House of Commotion’, here are legendary soap opera characters that made our childhood wonderful.

Boy Alinco – Bayo Bankole (Papa Ajasco)

With his cartoonish glasses and eccentric walk, Boy Alinco was the first fashionista we fell in love with as kids. The interesting character was later reprised by Victor Oyebode.

Madam Gagoo – Toun Oni (Binta and Friends)

Madam Gagoo, who married Binta’s father in one of the episodes, gave us all the chills. If you remember this character, you should be married with kids.

Ireti – Sola Onayiga (Fuji House of Commotion)

Sola Onayiga

Ireti, ‘Kitchen Practical’, tortured her family with her overbearing cooking skills but she also sold smiles to us for free.

Onayiga died in Lagos on July 17, 2022.

Toyin Tomato – Sola Sobowale (Super Story)

Toyin Tomato, brilliantly played by Sola Sobowale, turned loverboy Suara inside out in the first episode of Super Story ‘Oh Father Oh Daughter’.

The show became a success from then on.

Bisi – Funke Akindele (I Need To Know)

Before she became an enviable filmmaker, Funke Akindele had played Bisi in ‘I Need To Know’. Some of us can still vividly see Bisi in her green and white school uniform. Can you?

Nnenna – Olayinka Olukunga (Nnenna and Friends)

Nnenna was an on-screen darling to kids. The show, which focused on educating and entertaining children, was a spin-off from Super Story.

Caro – Kehinde Bankole (Super Story)

Kehinde Bankole gave us wonderful Saturday evenings through her character, Caro, in ‘Super Story: One Bad Apple’. The series also featured the graceful Grace Ama.

Richard – Sam Uche Anyamele (Super Story)

Everyone had a negative perception towards Sam Anyamele in real life based on his portrayal of the ‘bad guy’ in ‘No pain No gain’. Surely one of the villains we love to hate.

Peaceful Peace – Ngozi Nwosu (Fuji House of Commotion)

Peaceful Peace wasn’t all that peaceful after all. But you couldn’t blame her. No one could be peaceful in the Fuji house of commotion.

Chief Zebrudaya – Chika Opala (New Masquerade)

Chief Zebrudaya, alias 4:30, dished out comedy to Nigerians, and the show became a favourite to millions based on its humour and important themes.

Sam loco Efe – Everyday People

Sam Loco was comedy personified in ‘Everyday People’. But he was also a custodian of knowledge and wisdom.

Okonkwo – Pete Edochie (Things Fall Apart)

Veteran actor Pete Edochie rose to the character of the irrepressible Okonkwo in the film adaptation of Achebe’s novel ‘Things Fall Apart’. The rest became history.

Grandma – Lanre Hassan (Dear Mother)

Do you remember an episode where everyone ought to fast but grandma was caught stealing food from the fridge by Susan?

Village Headmaster – Justus Esiri (Village Headmaster)

Late Justus Esiri, who took over the infamous Village Headmaster character, sure left an indelible mark on the entertainment industry.

Abija – Tajudeen Oyewole (Ọ̀pá Aje)

Abija wielded the mystical staff of commerce (Ọ̀pá Aje) believed to be responsible for economic prosperity. Ọ̀pá Aje set the pace for the series Koto Orun by Yekini Ajileye.
